Fragments from the episcopal principate archive in the Manuscript Collection of Trento Municipal Library (15th-18th centuries)

Scientific Director: Paolo Pombeni (ISIG-FBK)
Scientific Coordinator: Katia Occhi (ISIG-FBK)– Andrea Giorgi (University of Trento)
Collaborator: Massimo Scandola (University of Trento)

The research will focus on examining the Episcopal Principate documentation which got dispersed and separated from its point of origin after the 1803 secularization and then followed different routes from those we currently know about when documentation was transported to Innsbruck, Vienna and Munich at the beginning of, and throughout, the 19th century. The objective will hence be to map the remaining documentation, or such as returned to Italy on the antiques market, where it would be bought up over the early decades of the 19th century by Baron Antonio Mazzetti, president of the Milan Court of Appeal, and bequeathed by him to the Trento Municipal Library, effective as of 1842. Data collected during the project will be fed into a computer database.

From a thorough examination of the first 1,548 items in the Manuscript Collection of the Trento Municipal Library – corresponding to the so-called “Mazzetti Collection” – we intend to identify, describe and inventory the dispersed documentation which never got united with the Trento Episcopal Principate Collection currently preserved at the Trento State Archives.
